Parton spoke about physical and emotional difficulties following the death of her husband Carl Dean last year

Dolly Parton made a public return during the opening of Dollywood’s 41st season, speaking about recent health challenges and the impact of grieving for her late husband Carl Dean.

The 80-year-old country music icon appeared on stage on Friday, March 13 at the Dollywood theme park, where she was welcomed by fans attending the start of the new season. Her appearance came after several months away from major public events, which had prompted concern among supporters about her well-being.

During her remarks, Parton acknowledged she had been dealing with both physical and emotional difficulties following the death of her husband last year. She told the audience, “I’ve been up to a lot. I’ve not been touring, as you know. I’ve had a few little health issues, and we’re taking good care of them.”

The singer also spoke about the emotional impact of losing Dean. She said, “I just kind of got worn down and worn out, grieving over Carl and a lot of other little things going on.”

Parton explained that she had focused on rebuilding her strength. “I just got myself kind of where I needed to build myself back up spiritually, emotionally, and physically. But, all is good. It didn’t slow me down.”

Dean died in March last year at the age of 82. Since then, Parton has maintained a lower public profile, often choosing to appear through video messages rather than attending events in person.

At the Dollywood event, she was joined on stage by Eugene Naughton, president of Dollywood Parks and Resorts. Despite the emotional discussion, Parton also shared light-hearted remarks with the crowd, joking about speculation regarding her personal life. “I’m not dating anybody. I think Carl Dean’s waiting for me. If I should show up at the pearly gates with somebody else, he would not like that. He’d be saying, ‘Who’s that little p**ser? You leave him outside the gates.’”

Parton’s health had previously raised questions after she postponed her planned Las Vegas residency until September 2026. At the time, she explained that she had experienced “some health challenges” and that doctors recommended she undergo “a few procedures”.

Reassuring fans about her future in music, she said, “And don’t worry about me quittin’ the business because God hasn’t said anything about stopping yet.”

She added, “But, I believe He is telling me to slow down right now so I can be ready for more big adventures with all of you. I love you and thank you for understanding.”

Concern about Parton increased earlier this year when she missed several public appearances, including her 80th birthday tribute concert at the Grand Ole Opry in January. At one point, her sister Freida asked fans to keep the singer in their prayers.

Parton later addressed speculation about her health in a video message, telling supporters, “I ain’t dead yet!”
