Disney is reportedly expanding its ‘Cinderella’ franchise, with details of a new creative team confirmed
Disney is expanding its Cinderella franchise with a new live-action film centred on the story of the evil stepsisters, Anastasia and Drizella.
The studio previously reimagined the animated classic in 2015, starring Lily James in the lead role, with Holliday Grainger and Sophie McShera portraying Anastasia and Drizella respectively.
The upcoming project will shift focus away from Cinderella and instead explore the perspective of her well-known antagonists.
No casting details have been announced so far, but early information about the creative team has emerged. According to Deadline, Akiva Schaffer is set to direct the film, while Dan Gregor and Doug Mand will rewrite a script originally developed by Michael Montemayor.
Schaffer most recently worked on the reboot of The Naked Gun, collaborating with Gregor and Mand, who also partnered with him on the Disney+ project Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers. Their involvement suggests a continuation of Disney’s strategy to revisit established characters through new storytelling approaches.
Plot details remain undisclosed, and it is not yet confirmed whether Cinderella herself will appear in the film.
Meanwhile, Disney continues to expand its live-action slate, with Moana scheduled for release in July 2026 and a Tangled remake currently in development.
