Homes destroyed, fishermen injured, boats damaged as winds, rain lash seaside communities
KARACHI:
A powerful spell of rain and high winds swept across Karachi overnight, wreaking havoc along the city’s coastal belt and leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Fragile homes collapsed, rooftops were torn off, and fishing communities bore the brunt of the sudden storm.
According to the Coastal Media Centre, the storm struck late Wednesday night, affecting a wide stretch from Mubarak Village to Lath Basti. Several settlements – including Abdul Rehman Goth, Bhittha Village, Keamari, Baba Bhit, Kakaa Village, Younusabad, Ibrahim Hyderi, Rehri Goth, Ali Akbar Shah Goth, and others – reported significant property damage.
Strong gusts flattened huts and ripped away roofs, while boundary walls crumbled under pressure. In multiple incidents during the storm, several fishermen were also reported injured.
The impact extended beyond land, as fishing boats and launches operating at sea suffered considerable damage due to rough conditions.
Spokesperson for Coastal Media Kamal Shah urged authorities to act swiftly, calling for immediate dispatch of rescue teams to the affected areas. He emphasised the need for rapid damage assessments and prompt relief efforts to support residents struggling in the aftermath of the disaster.
Residents now face a difficult recovery, as many have been left without shelter following the sudden and severe weather.
