RAWALPINDI:

Residents of Murree have announced a protest campaign against the privatisation of Basic Health Units (BHUs) and Rural Health Centres (RHCs), warning that land donated by locals decades ago for healthcare cannot be sold to private parties.

At a public meeting outside BHU Angoori, community leaders, political representatives, and residents rejected the Punjab government’s decision to privatise BHU Mahngal.

They said the land — 15 kanals donated in 1978 — was given as a public trust to provide free healthcare.

The gathering unanimously demanded reversal of the decision and warned of legal action if the government proceeded.

“Health is a fundamental right, and we will not compromise on it,” participants declared.

Two committees were formed — one at the local level and another for legal matters — to organise protests at union council, district, and divisional offices.

Leaders said if the decision is not withdrawn, they will stage larger demonstrations next week and also approach the High Court.
