Heavy rain across the Chicago area Friday caused localized flooding in several south suburbs while severe storms moved through parts of the Midwest.
According to local reports, flooding was seen in communities including Lynwood, South Chicago Heights and Steger after intense rainfall Friday evening.
Video from the area showed heavy downpours and water covering streets. Some vehicles became stranded and emergency crews were called to assist drivers.
The storm system also affected travel as the Federal Aviation Administration reported ground stops earlier Friday at both Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Chicago Midway International Airport.
By Friday night, about 600 flights had been canceled at O’Hare, while delays of around one hour were reported at both airports.
The severe weather extended beyond Illinois. Authorities in Michigan confirmed that three people were killed and several others injured after an apparent tornado struck the Union Lake area.
