The urban legend of millionaire beggars proves true when police found at least Rs100,000 from the rags of a beggar in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, and it was only a day’s income.
The daily wage of a skilled worker like mason, painter or plumber ranges between Rs2,400 and Rs3,000.
Gulshan-e-Iqbal Police arrested the wealthy beggar during an anti-beggary operation on Rashid Minhas Road and recovered more than Rs100,000 in cash from him. SHO Kamran Qureshi said the suspect, identified as Akbar, was taken into custody after police searched his bag and found cash in various denominations, including Rs10, Rs100, Rs500 and Rs1,000 notes.
According to police, the suspect is a resident of Quaidabad and had come to Gulshan-e-Iqbal for begging. During initial questioning, he revealed that he originally belongs to Bahawalpur, Punjab, and begs in different areas of the city, including Gulshan-e-Memar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Johar and Nazimabad.
Police have registered a case against the suspect and handed him over to the investigation wing for further inquiry.
