Anne Hathaway takes on a bold new role in the upcoming A24 feature Mother Mary, described in Vogue as playing “a sort of Gaga–Taylor Swift hybrid.”
The film, directed by David Lowery, is shaping up to be a music-driven psychological drama with original songs by Charli XCX and production from Jack Antonoff.
Hathaway stars as a pop icon undergoing a personal crisis, having fled her tour and reconnected with an old friend played by Michaela Coel.
The story explores themes of fame, identity, and the pressure of public life. Hathaway’s character is reportedly not basking in adoration but “searching for her own centre and finding only darkness.”
Adding to the film’s musical significance, Charli XCX revealed that the character’s sonic identity was crafted after watching Hathaway perform a key dance sequence on set.
“Anne’s movement was super graphic, very thrashing and jerky and bold in this super magical and scary way,” she said. “It felt volatile and gripping, so Jack and I went away and thought about that.”
The film also features appearances from FKA Twigs, Hunter Schafer, and Kaia Gerber, positioning Mother Mary as one of the most talked-about projects for A24.
Though the film’s release date has not been confirmed, the concept and cast have already captured attention.
