Lanez was convicted of shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the foot in 2020 after leaving a party
Tory Lanez has exhausted his final legal avenue after the California Supreme Court refused to hear his latest appeal against his conviction in the Megan Thee Stallion shooting case.
The Canadian artist, born Daystar Peterson, sought to overturn or reduce the 10-year sentence handed down following his 2022 conviction. According to reports, the state’s highest court rejected the petition filed by his legal team, leaving the original verdict and sentence in place.
Lanez was found guilty in December 2022 on charges of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, possession of a loaded and unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. He was sentenced in August 2023 after facing a potential maximum of 22 years in prison and possible deportation to Canada.
In November, a three-judge panel of the 2nd District Court of Appeal dismissed his earlier appeal in a 46-page ruling, stating that his claims of prosecutorial misconduct were unfounded and that no reversible error had occurred during the trial. The California Supreme Court’s decision to uphold that ruling means his conviction now stands without further recourse at state level.
Lanez was convicted of shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the foot on July 22, 2020 after leaving a party at Kylie Jenner’s Hollywood Hills home. During the trial, Megan testified that Lanez fired at the back of her feet and told her to dance as she walked away from the SUV in which they had been travelling.
Lanez is currently serving his sentence at the California Men’s Colony. Last year, he was hospitalised after being stabbed in prison, reportedly sustaining 14 stab wounds and suffering collapsed lungs.
