KARACHI:
The Sindh government has approved Rs five billion for the city’s wastewater treatment and recycling projects, aiming to deliver visible improvements to Karachi’s sewage system by the end of this year.
Chaired by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, the meeting set an interim target of treating 30-35 million gallons of water per day (MGD) by June 30, while ensuring the full 100 MGD capacity of TP-1 becomes operational by December 31. CM Shah emphasised that wastewater management is a top priority and that citizens will see tangible results within 2025.
While reviewing progress on Karachi’s wastewater treatment and recycling initiatives, CM Shah described the TP-4 project as a “revolutionary step” for the city’s water management system and instructed relevant authorities to expedite decision-making. The meeting highlighted the completion of ongoing treatment plants, immediate restoration of TP-1, and acceleration of the TP-4 project under a public-private partnership (PPP) model toward financial closure and operational start.
Officials noted that TP-1, with a capacity of 100 MGD, could achieve the interim target of 30-35 MGD by June with immediate action. Completion of the plant by December 2025 will require Rs 5 billion, for which full government support has been assured.
