Roan’s past comments on police in schools re-emerge as security incident draws scrutiny
Past public comments attributed to Chappell Roan have resurfaced online following recent controversy involving a security incident in Brazil, drawing renewed attention to her views on policing.
A document from a 2021 Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors meeting shows a submission under the name Kayleigh Amstutz, Roan’s birth name, addressing the issue of law enforcement presence in schools. The correspondence, dated 8 June 2021, has recently circulated on Reddit, where users have linked it to the singer’s current public scrutiny.
In the statement, Roan urged officials to remove law enforcement from school campuses entirely. “Law enforcement has no place in our schools to begin with, and I strongly urge the Board to take decisive action in removing LASD from school campuses altogether,” the submission reads.
The comments continue with a broader critique of policing in educational settings. “Cops do not belong on school campuses. Creating more oversight of law enforcement on campus in the form of data and transparency will not fix the fundamental problem: policing is a violent and racist institution that has no place in schools.”
The document also references concerns about long-term impacts on students. “Research shows that police on campus do not make schools safer, in fact, it makes innocent children targets of police misconduct and perpetuates a school-to-prison pipeline.”
The renewed attention comes days after a separate incident involving a security guard confronting 11-year-old Ada Law, the daughter of Law and Catherine Harding, at a hotel in São Paulo on March 21. The guard, Pascal Duvier, denied working for Roan and stated, “The actions I took were not on behalf of Chappell Roan.”
Roan also denied involvement, stating, “I didn’t even see a woman and a child. No one came up to me.”
The resurfaced comments have added further context to ongoing discussions surrounding the incident and the artist’s public profile.
