Education department says public and private sectors shall remain closed on Fridays and Saturdays
PESHAWAR:
The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government has announced that schools across the province will remain closed two days a week for two months or until further orders, according to an official notification. The decision has been taken in response to oil supply constraints amid the tense situation in the Middle East.
According to a circular issued by the K-P’s Elementary and Secondary Education Department, the decision was taken following a provincial cabinet meeting held on Monday in light of the regional situation affecting petroleum supplies and prices, as well as the potential impact on foreign exchange reserves.
The circular stated that the K-P government has approved a set of temporary fuel conservation and responsible governance measures for two months, aimed at reducing non-essential fuel consumption.
However, the circular added that school heads may continue home schooling or online teaching and learning wherever possible.
Prior to the K-P government’s move, the provincial governments of Punjab and Balochistan had also announced the closure of educational institutions due to the fuel crisis gripping the country, which has been exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in the Gulf.
Similarly, the Sindh government on Tuesday announced that schools across the province will remain closed from March 16 to March 31. The provincial administration will also introduce a partial work from home arrangement for government employees, under which staff will work remotely on Fridays.
