Dr Shamshad Akhtar — Pakistan’s first woman governor of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), first female finance minister and the first woman chairperson of the Stock Exchange Board — was laid to rest on Saturday at Mewa Shah Graveyard beside her mother.
Her funeral prayers were offered at Sultan Mosque, DHA, and were attended by a large number of people from the financial, business and social circles. The funeral attendees termed her demise a major loss for the country and paid tribute to her lifelong services for strengthening Pakistan’s financial sector and institutions. Among the prominent attendees were Director General Rangers Muhammad Shamrez Khan, SBP Deputy Governor Dr Inayat Hussain, Dr Saleemullah, Adviser to the Finance Minister Khurram Shehzad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Adviser on Finance Muzammil Aslam, Pakistan Stock Exchange Managing Director Farrukh Khan, board member Ahmed Chinoy, besides senior bankers and representatives of leading financial institutions. The Board, management and staff of the SBP in a condolence statement said Dr Shamshad Akhtar made history as its first woman governor and set benchmarks of integrity, leadership and public service.
