It has also surpassed ‘Inside Out 2’ to rank as Hollywood’s highest-grossing animated film of all time
Zootopia 2 has become the highest-grossing domestic release of 2025, overtaking A Minecraft Movie at the North American box office.
Disney’s animated sequel has earned $424.2 million in the United States and Canada after 13 weekends in the top 10, narrowly surpassing A Minecraft Movie, which previously led the domestic market with $424.08 million. The film had already secured the year’s top positions internationally, with $1.425 billion overseas and $1.85 billion worldwide.
Released nine years after the original, Zootopia 2 opened ahead of Thanksgiving with $158 million in North America and $559 million globally over the five-day holiday period. Those figures marked the second-largest Thanksgiving launch on record, the biggest debut ever for an animated film and the fourth-largest worldwide opening in box office history, behind Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Supported by strong reviews and word-of-mouth, the family film became the fastest PG-rated release to reach $1 billion worldwide, achieving the milestone in 17 days. It has since surpassed Inside Out 2 to rank as Hollywood’s highest-grossing animated film of all time and overtook Avengers: Endgame as the biggest Motion Picture Association title ever in China. The sequel now stands as the eighth-highest-grossing film in global box office history.
Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, the film follows rabbit police officer Judy Hopps, voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin, and fox Nick Wilde, voiced by Jason Bateman, as they reunite to investigate a mysterious reptilian newcomer voiced by Ke Huy Quan.
The film’s sustained performance has contributed to Disney’s strongest annual box office since before the pandemic, with additional billion-dollar releases including Lilo & Stitch and Avatar: Fire and Ash helping global ticket sales surpass $6 billion.
