The Tropical Cyclone Alert Centre of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into deep waters today (Monday) in view of cyclone Shakti,
The centre issued two successive alerts on Sunday. According to the 10th alert issued late Sunday night, the severe cyclone has moved farther away from Karachi but its intensity in the northwestern Arabian Sea remains unchanged.
The cyclone’s centre is now located approximately 800 km southwest of Karachi.
Over the past 12 hours, its movement has been in a west/southwestward direction and it is expected to continue moving southwest until October 6 (today).
Over the next 12 hours, it is likely to turn eastward towards the west-central and northwestern Arabian Sea, where it will gradually weaken by one stage and revert to a cyclonic storm. According to the alert, gusty winds up to 55 km per hour near the Sindh coast may cause rough sea conditions, advising fishermen to avoid going into deep waters.
Between October 5 and October 7, wind speeds may exceed 135 km per hour, potentially generating very high sea waves, the alert added. After moving eastward within the Arabian Sea, the system is expected to weaken by one category.
The city experienced clear skies and intense sunshine on Sunday. Due to high humidity levels, residents felt noticeable heat during the afternoon.
According to the PMD, the maximum temperature recorded in Karachi was 32.8°C, while humidity remained at 69 percent. The Early Warning Centre forecast that on Monday and Tuesday, the city’s weather will remain humid with mostly sunny conditions.
Meanwhile, rain accompanied by strong winds, thunderstorms, and isolated hailstorms is expected in various parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Islamabad, and Punjab during the next 24 hours. At a few places, heavy rainfall and hailstorms are also likely. The weather in other parts of the country is expected to remain hot and dry.
