NEW YORK:

The historic halls of Gracie Mansion, the official residence of the New York City mayor, echoed with celebration and solidarity as the city hosted its first-ever Pakistan Heritage Day reception on Thursday, coinciding with the 78th anniversary of Pakistan’s Independence Day. The event, attended by senior city and state officials, political leaders, diplomats, and a large number of prominent Pakistani-American community members, underscored both the contributions of the diaspora and the deepening ties between Pakistan and the United States.

Welcoming the gathering, Mayor Eric Adams praised the Pakistani-American community for its “outstanding contributions” to New York’s social, cultural, and economic life. “Our strength lies in our diversity, and the Pakistani community is a vital part of this city’s global identity,” he said, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to engage with all international communities.

A moment of silence was observed to honour the victims of recent floods in Pakistan, reflecting the solidarity of New Yorkers with those affected.

In his remarks, Consul General Aamer Ahmed Atozai thanked Mayor Adams for recognising Pakistan Heritage Day and for acknowledging the role of the diaspora. He noted that Pakistan’s heritage was rooted not only in its independence in 1947 but also in ancient civilisations, pluralistic traditions, and cultural richness that “continue to inspire the world.”

Atozai also highlighted the community’s accomplishments in diverse fields — from medicine and academia to technology, public service, and the arts — making it an integral part of New York’s civic and economic fabric. Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, congratulated the community on Independence Day and commended its role in strengthening Pakistan-US relations.

He reiterated that Pakistan was fully capable of defending its sovereignty while remaining committed to peace, progress, and international cooperation. Both envoys extended gratitude to the Mayor’s Office for International Affairs, led by Commissioner Aissata Camara, for its support in making the landmark celebration possible.

The evening concluded with a reaffirmation of the enduring bonds of friendship between Pakistan and the United States, with the vibrant Pakistani-American community celebrated as a vital bridge linking the two nations.
